hospital. the marines killed during that training all part of the second marine ground combat force based in camp lejeune, north carolina. back here in the southbay, one man is dead after san jose police say he tried to run over an officer with his car. it happened in an unincorporated area of san jose just before 7:00 last night, three san jose police officers tried to pull over a stolen car. the driver reportedly refused to stop and instead rammed the back of an unmarked police car. when the officer had gotten out of his car, police say the suspect tried to run him over. that's when the officer fired that deadly shot. >> just heard two quick shots, pop, pop. then that's when all the fire department and all the rest of the cops started showing up. >> the suspect died at the hospital. police say another person was in the stolen car and is being questioned as a witness. no officers were hurt. >> new detail this morning about

a raceway crash that killed the 14-year-old boy from santa rosa this weekend. marcus johnson died when his 17-year-old cousin chase lost control of a sprint car and crashed right into the pit area at the raceway. the johnson family now said chase tells him the steering wheel in his car came loose as he entered a turn. that ultimately caused the crash. the family said that car was new. at this point it's not clear why the wheel would come loose. the crash happened while chase johnson was driving warm-up laps for an upcoming competition. we are on stormwatch. meteorologist christina loren is standing by with a look at potential rain onot potential, there is rain coming to the bay area. >> right, there is. i've been wrong before, but not many times. it is happening, got to be honest. temperatures are looking pretty good. nice and mild. all the cloud cover overhead

subtropical moisture. feels muggy, tropical. last day of winter. it's going to feel winter-like tomorrow for the first day of spring. temperatures getting close to the 70 degree mark just about everywhere. here our counterclockwise rotation, showers coming down over the northernmost portion of the state. right now we're getting a little bit of activity just to the west of ukiah. south and east through the day today. we're not expecting much activity, though, until later on. 3:00 to 4:00 in the north bay, north of the golden gate bridge at that point. between 4:00 and 7:00 showers will spread south, south bay in particular. continue overnight. heavier rain on the way tomorrow morning, could make for a rough ride to work. we're going to see clearing tomorrow afternoon and winds will pick up. i'll time this out for you city by city, let you know when these showers are expected to clear your city. how much we're expecting right here in the bay area and on the way to tahoe. coming up in my next report. for now, back to you. >> thank you. city of santa clara going out

for the teams and other employees. the mayor of santa clara says that revenue could be made up for in other ways. >> because the super bowl is an extraordinary event, we're trying to make ourselves competitive in the bid. we want to ensure we put our best foot forward. we have a great partner with the super bowl committee. they will make up all the costs, actual costs, so it won't cost santa clara anything. >> now, in addition to waving that hotel tax for nfl, city leaders are reportedly willing to waive ticket surcharges for the super bowl amounting to about $6 million arnold also give up $4.54 per space parking fee, all in an effort to sweeten the deal and convince nfl to bring the super bowl here to santa clara in 2016. the city council is expected to vote on a final proposal tonight at 6:30. again, an ultimate decision is expected on friday. live in santa clara, monte francis, nbc bay area news.

in fremont now police are looking for the suspect who stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of copper wire. investigators say the suspect broke into a pse&g storage yard on boyce road sunday morning. he drove a stolen forklift and broke through the fence. the suspect then used the same forklift to place 5600 pounds of copper wire on the flatbed of a truck. police are looking for a mid 1990s ford f-350 or f-450 with an open black flatbed. the man accused of killing a well-known san francisco newspaper vendor could be in court as early as today. police arresting 36-year-old mark cassell. they say cassell literally picked up 77-year-old dallas ayers and threw him on the pavement near market and montgomery streets in january. ayers suffered a hip injury and then died three weeks later. he was well-known in that area where he sold the chronicle for

the past 30 years, most recently at the montgomery street b.a.r.t. station. cassell is believed to be a transient. the judge right now questioning whether the man accused of stealing a luxury lot and going on that million dollar joy ride from sausalito harbor is, in fact, competent to stand trial. a court hearing will be held today to appoint doctors to determine whether leslie gardener can, in fact, stand trial. gardner being charged with grand theft for allegedly stealing the 82-foot sailboat "darling" and running it aground in pacifica earlier this month. he's held on $1 million bail. a shocking discovery, a giant sinkhole completely swallows a man's pond. it happened in the town of newcastle sometime sunday morning. the man had two man made ponds in his backyard. when he went outside, one of them was just gone. he thinks it took about four or five hours for the whole thing

mistake. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. the president is getting ready to head to the middle east. this evening president obama will get on "air force one" and fly to israel for his first foreign trip of his second term. the president will meet with members of the new israeli government, palestinian and king of jordan while on the trip. prior to leaving the white house, president obama will meet with the leaders of northern ireland. >> call this one the battle of the tech titans, samsung taking on apple in another venue this morning. reports are the asian tech companies working on a wristwatch that works a lot like a smartphone. if that sounds familiar, you're correct. just last month rumors started flying apple was working on a wristwatch that would perform the same functions as the iphone and ipad. at this point there's no word on how much either of the items would cost. this just the latest venue in which samsung is going directly, head to head, against apple.

just last week samsung unveiling galaxy s4 newest competition for iphone. >> normally it doesn't react but galaxy s4 seems to have the cupertino company scared. right after they created a why iphone site to tell people why iphone is the best choice. the site includes 12 reasons the iphone is better including a camera, siri and the icloud. just before samsung's release, an apple executive gave a series of interviews criticizing will android system. the question of the day is, are they too sheer to downward dog? sportsmaker lululemon recalling most of its black yoga pants because turns out they are see-through but not on purpose. >> they didn't mean to. i got that. the company says the latest batch of their most popular pants doesn't quite measure up to standards, now it's going to cost them. nbc bay area kristi smith is at
